Jubriel: Culture Shock and Community

It’s no secret that our lives in the past few years have been thrown for a loop. The essence of normalcy was tossed out the window, and we were experiencing changes left and right. Many aspects of life were affected, from education to employment, and even our social life. Handling these changes was no easy feat and definitely made us struggle through a lot.

But what about those that went through major life changes pre-COVID? What about those who are no stranger adapting to new challenges, lifestyles, and environments? Those who went through similar life-changing events in their past that forced them to adapt to a new way of life, while abandoning their old sense of normalcy.

Listen as multimedia journalist Jubriel Chaparro interviews a group of people whose stories all have one common denominator: They needed to leave their home countries to come to America. These people are Juleidy Cruz (Cuba), Gabriel Chapparo (Puerto Rico), and Margarita Osorio (Colombia). Learn how these three dealt with culture shock, developing new communities, and what they did to adapt and stay healthy during this change in their once “normal lives”.

Five journalists responded to the theme: “Back to the Normal”. Click here to see all the stories covered in our Normalcy Issue. For more podcasts, check out our Podcasts archive.
