SLOW&LOW 2023 Chicago Lowrider Festival
Watch MMJ Reggie Martinez explore the Slow and Low Chicago Lowrider Festival at Navy Pier.

At Navy Pier, the largest gathering celebrating Lowrider culture, community, and art in Chicago was held. With more than 250 customized cars, dozens of bicycles, motorcycles, and more; the Slow and Low Chicago Lowrider Festival was an experience like no other.

Established in 2011, the festival celebrates not only lowriding and Latino culture, but also community. We interview Edward Magic Calderon, one of the founders of Slow and Low, about the history and evolution of the festival. Junior Herrera, Slow and Low participant, and aspiring Lowriders shed light on what Lowrider culture means to them.

In this issue, we step into worlds different (or similar to) than our own and share our experiences. What does culture/community look like, and how does it affect you? Dive into our “Culture” Issue to hear how youth journalists address this topic.
