Some are still working, some are in school, and some of us find ourselves completely isolated during Illinois&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.illinoispolicy.org\/pritzker-extends-illinois-stay-at-home-order-through-april-30\/\">stay-at-home-order<\/a>. So, how are my peers and I coping with this global crisis?<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Life now, just feels like one very long day,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Sophia said. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153When I have memories of the day, how do I know it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not the memory from the day before? Memories are melting together.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s no secret that isolation can be unhealthy<em>. <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/2019\/05\/ce-corner-isolation\">Reported by the American Psychological Association<\/a>, social isolation can lead to depression, poor sleep quality, impaired immunity, and inability to handle stress; amongst other effects.<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153My mental health before isolation wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t that great anyways. I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t go to a therapist when I should, and my uncle died recently. I think forced isolation really impacted my mental health. I hate being in the house now, more than usual. Also the only people I can visit are my family, which suck, they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re bad for my mental health.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">Shutdowns began early to mid-March, leading into spring break in the U.S. In Miami Beach, Fla., the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/community\/miami-dade\/miami-beach\/article241220656.html\">Winter Party Festival was being<\/a> held, despite an active outbreak. Those who stayed inside were upset that Spring Breakers extended the quarantine, when\u00e2\u20ac\u2039 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/11\/us\/florida-spring-break-coronavirus.html\">illnesses and deaths had been reported after the festivities.<\/a><\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Some younger people, if not most from what I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve seen, are following the rules. I haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t seen the whole spring break video. But I do feel that sometimes, sometimes man, I just hate being indoors, I wanna go play tennis.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">While being outdoors is discouraged, Adrian, 21, is taking this time to slow down. Pre-shutdown, Adrian was a server and studied traditional animation at Columbia College Chicago. (Photo\/Adrian Sandoval)<\/em><\/p><\/figcaption><\/figure><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I lost my job and my school all in the same weekend.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Adrian recalls. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You always hear in history about large groups of people being laid off, and\u00e2\u20ac\u2039 \u00e2\u20ac\u2039I just never saw the restaurant industry taking a turn for the worst.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">Sophia, Adrian, and I lost our jobs in the restaurant industry due to the shutdown. \u00e2\u20ac\u2039After crowds in Chicago celebrated St. Patrick\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Day against better judgement, restaurants and bars were <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.eater.com\/2020\/3\/15\/21180768\/illinois-restaurants-closed-bars-governor-pritzker-coronavirus\">ordered to be closed<\/a>. Only take-out, delivery, and curbside pickup are permitted.<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">[Before quarantine] \u00e2\u20ac\u0153I was barely making it to the next place I had to go to. Go to work, go to school. Now I can finally do my work the way I want to do it, and not race against the clock of other stuff I have to juggle,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Adrian said.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">Adrian was scheduled to graduate in May. Columbia College Chicago is still holding remote classes, but the <a href=\"https:\/\/columbiachronicle.com\/breaking-2020-graduates-will-have-to-wait-a-year-for-live-commencement?print=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in-person graduation is cancelled<\/a>.<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m a first generation student. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m the only person in my family to go to art school like this, and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m doing something that I want to do. It is shitty that I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get to graduate, but I really like the content I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been making.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">Essential businesses remain open, mainly grocery stores. Jordan, 22, is a freelance illustrator and works at a large grocery store in Chicago. Her roommate works at the same store. I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want to be here on the front lines. I would rather not have to deal with this man coughing in his mask.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">Stores attempt to flatten the curve too, from shortening hours to limiting their customer capacity. Some customers follow guidelines, others do not.<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re treating it like a vacation. That\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s why I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t gauge how serious the situation is. I see people in hazmat suits, but then I also see people in shorts, no mask, just hangin\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 out.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">Many cannot afford to stop working, so they risk their health to continue. Outside of social interaction, Jordan sees her life as business as usual.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I feel like other people are suffering, but I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m an introvert. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m perfectly okay with talking to someone over a video camera.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">As news about the virus updates hourly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healio.com\/psychiatry\/practice-management\/news\/online\/%7B250e2c9c-e510-4109-bb84-024660539c08%7D\/covid-19s-mental-health-effects-by-age-group-children-college-students-working-age-adults-and-older-adults\">young people find it hard<\/a> to discern their emotions living through a pandemic.<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153I think I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m definitely sad, but I also process things weird. I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t exactly understand what&#8217;s going on. I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m also panicking because I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have health insurance. So if I get sick, I will just die,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she laughs.<\/p><p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n<\/p><p style=\"font-size: 18px\">As a 22-year-old living solo for two years, I cycle between being okay and struggling during this time. I lost my job mid-March, and income has been a major stressor. I wish the term was physical distancing instead of social distancing.
